Become a Rapidan River Master Gardener
Do you love gardening, enjoy learning new things, and want to share your knowledge with others?
Consider becoming a Rapidan River Master Gardener.
Rapidan River Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who serve our communities through horticultural education and outreach. We provide reliable, research-based gardening information through the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) and serve Culpeper, Greene, Madison, and Orange Counties.
How Do You Become a Master Gardener?
Your journey begins with the Virginia Master Gardener Training Program, offered once each year and taught by an experienced Virginia extension agent.
The program includes a minimum of 50 hours of horticultural education. After completing the training, you become a Master Gardener Intern.
To earn certification as a Virginia Master Gardener, interns complete at least 50 hours of approved volunteer service through educational and horticultural projects.
To remain an active Master Gardener, volunteers complete each year:
20 hours of volunteer service
8 hours of continuing education
What Will You Learn?
Training is designed for gardeners of all experience levels. Whether you have gardened for decades or are just getting started, you will gain practical, science-based knowledge that prepares you to become an effective community volunteer.
Topics include:
Soil, botany, and gardening fundamentals
Plant identification and plant health
Common plant diseases and insect problems
Vegetable, fruit, flower, and perennial gardening
Proper planting, pruning, and care of trees and shrubs
Plant propagation
Lawn and landscape care
Sustainable gardening practices
Sharing research-based horticultural information with the public
Where Can You Volunteer?
Master Gardeners put their training to work throughout our four-county service area. Opportunities vary throughout the year and include:
Demonstration Gardens
Help maintain educational gardens that showcase plants, gardening techniques, and varieties suited to our area. Some gardens also provide produce or flowers for the community.
Native Plant & Pollinator Gardens
Help create and maintain gardens that demonstrate sustainable landscaping practices and support native plants, pollinators, and other wildlife.
Educational Outreach
Share gardening information at farmers markets, community events, workshops, and other public programs.
Youth Education
Help provide hands-on gardening and horticultural programs for children and families.
Horticultural Classes
Assist with or teach educational programs on gardening, plants, landscaping, and related topics.
Annual Plant Sale
Help propagate and grow plants, organize the event, and assist customers during our annual plant sale. Proceeds help support Rapidan River Master Gardener educational projects.
